Allena Grant of Moods Eyewear Is Changing the Game In Luxury Eyewear

In 2020, the eyewear industry had expanded to a 147.60 billion industry up from 131.32 in 2018. These trends project a possible CAGR (compound annual growth rate) in the eyewear industry of 8.5% between now and 2028. With those large numbers, it’s unfortunate that such a small number of black women-owned brands are a part of this industry. An even smaller number are considered to be luxury brands. We had the pleasure of interviewing a woman who is breaking the glass ceiling in this industry. Allena Grant of Moods eyewear is changing the game as it relates to women of color in luxury eyewear.

Can you tell our readers about your background?

Allena: I have a degree in biology. For the last five years of my career, I have worked in Science Education. My mother has started many businesses so I have watched her as a young girl pursue entrepreneurship. So when I got the chance to pursue my own business I really did not think much of it since I have watched my mother fearlessly pursue her dreams.

What inspired you to start your business?

Allena: To be quite honest by the end of 2019 I really was not happy at my job at the time and I decided to dig deep into what my passion was. So I started to sketch and made plans to pursue an eyewear line but then I stopped. In 2020 the pandemic hit and I was laid off of my job. With all the extra time on my hands I decided to put my energy and hard work into myself. I found a manufacturer and put things into place and I received my frames Nov. 2020

Where is your business based?

Allena: My business is based in Houston, Texas but I have an online store so I can ship anywhere.

How did you start your business? What were the first steps you took?

Allena: I started my business by simply taking my idea seriously and taking the steps to solidify my ideas. The first step I took was naming my business and designing the logo. After I decided on my business name I started researching a manufacturer.

What have been your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them?

Allena: My biggest challenge has been marketing and establishing my brand as a luxury brand. I am currently overcoming this challenge by deciding to hire a public relations agency to increase my visibility.

How do you stay focused?

Allena: It has been hard to stay focused but when you are putting your time and money on the line you tend to work hard for yourself. I am just being intentional with everything I do and choosing not to give up on myself. Entrepreneurship is a series of ups and downs and I am giving myself grace. But most importantly I am pursuing a passion of mind and allowing myself to enjoy the journey and have fun! All of this is a little reminder to stay grounded and focused.
