Nonprofit Spotlight: Silent Cry Incorporated, Founded By Shawanna Vaughn

California native, Shawanna Vaughn is the founder and the Director of Silent Cry Inc. Silent Cry Incorporated is a product of Ms. Vaughn’s quiet tears from the pain and trauma of the hardships of incarceration and loss of a brother to gang initiation. As an advocate Shawanna Vaughn has also worked to raise awareness around Post Traumatic Prison Disorder. “ There is a need for training of prison personnel in the basic core competencies of trauma. They must be informed about mental health care, understanding policies for service provision to incarcerated individuals, and investments in behavioral healthcare services.” Shawanna Vaughn’s mission is one that keeps her grounded and thankful every day.

Never allowing anything or one to prevent her goals, Vaughn herself has dealt with numerous health issues such as; cancer survivor, congestive heart failure, being legally blind but continuously fights the Silent Cries of Trauma.  Silent Cry, Inc., a Harlem-based nonprofit organization taking the holistic approach to life after mass incarceration and trauma.

Shawanna recognizes the overwhelming gap in services and mental health support for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated people hence, the Post Traumatic Prison Disorder Act Shawanna W76337, which has since been introduced in the New York State Senate.  A warrior spirit and community advocate, Shawanna’s mission is a true birth out of her gratefulness and thankful spirit.
