What inspired you to become an entrepreneur?
After I had my first baby, I got this heightened sense of creativity. I had always been into fashion but I never dreamt of having a brand of my own. And when I had my son I had the courage and trust in myself enough to say hey ” Now you can dress your baby in whatever you want and how about you dress him in something of his own. And boom by the end of 2017 I had birth another baby called Rich Baby Born Rich.
When you created Rich Baby Born Rich, what impact did you intend to make?
Initially, I just wanted a clothing brand of my own. Clothes that my family and close friends could wear just to show their support for Chizzy (my son). Then as time went on, I’m like nahh I actually want to create change with my brand. At the time I still didn’t know exactly how I was going to do it. I just used to have these visions where a boatload of kids would be rocking our clothes and having fun, in the purest and natural way that children typically navigate through life.
Then in 2019 I started really thinking about what exactly I wanted to do with my brand and how it would be represented. And that’s when it clicked. I said that I would channel my focus to promote my brand similar to how I mother my baby; and that’s through teaching, guidance, and with love. I’m aware that no matter what your teaching style maybe if it’s good enough it’ll stick. And for me, I already had the charisma, the swag, a small following, and now a new baby that everyone fell in love with. So with all of that, I now had the desire to want what I wanted for Chizzy for every other kid and their parents too.
How did you acquire the ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines as an entrepreneur?
Um, I may have an advantage in the area. I also happen to be a Registered Nurse. And in Nursing that’s one of your battlefields; ” working under pressure” & “deadlines”. Whether it be, administering meds on time, or performing assessments, or coding a patient while a family member is watching; working under pressure, and meeting deadlines are all too familiar for me. So I just applied those same principles, discipline, and commitment to my own business.
What would you like for our readers to know about you and your company?
I want people to know that I’m just like them. I want them to know that I’ve already faced a tremendous amount of adversity in my life and that starting a business wasn’t something that was passed on to me. I had to grind my entire life to get the things that I desired. I lean on God for EVERYTHING. And because of my experiences, at the core of who I really am, I’m driven to inspire and to leave the greatest impact on anyone and anything I come in connection with. I believe I always had greatness inside of me but I’m just now figuring out how I am going to display it to the world. And you’re gonna see all of it through Rich Baby Born Rich.
What are some of the best qualities of your brand?
The passion to shed light on education. And the desire to teach children not only just to “get money” but what to do with your money once you get it. If you don’t have the mental capacity to know how to make money work for you then what’s the point of even having it. For us, you were already rich before you actually had the money in your possession. So what, you blow the money on a couple of pairs of J’s, a nice car, and some nice clothes, and jewelry and now that makes you hot shit? Absolutely not. After a while, with that pattern, your money runs out and now you’re back at square one looking fly with no money, and no financial means to change your life or circumstances let alone anyone else’s. And that’s not something we believe in. In fact, right now I don’t know of any other “clothing brand” that focuses on education with the same intent they use when they are focused on creating their products as we do.
How has business been for you during the pandemic?
Ironically enough, so far Rich Baby Born Rich has grown, acquired a larger following, and generated the most sales throughout the pandemic beginning in 2020 in comparison to previous years.
What do you enjoy most about the work that you do?
What I enjoy most is that all the things I do with Rich Baby Born Rich doesn’t feel like work. I have a room in my home that I turned into my office and can I tell you I am in that room for hours! And the moment I leave to eat, or run errands, or be present with my family, I’m already thinking about what Imma do when I get back to my office! Whereas with my nursing career, although I love being a Nurse, a lot of times I’ll think about when I’m gonna get to lunch, or how fast or slow will my shift feel like today, or okay how many days I have off this week?. And that tells me a lot about what I enjoy the most!
Any fall fashion tips for us?
Less can be more, and simple can be fly! It;’s all about how you carry yourself. Oh, and accessories can make or break an outfit!
Where do you see your business in 10 years? How do you plan to get there?
To be honest, I haven’t thought about that just yet. Right now I’m focused on learning the foundation of running a business, exploring new ways to be creative, and gaining new followers and supporters of my brand. What I do know is that, as long as I continue to create change, educate, and can measure the amount of people I have inspired or left an impact on, my business will be 10x better and greater than it is today! My plan is to be intentional about what we create and put out to the universe, and never lose my integrity while doing so.
