Meme Kelly of Silk Me Kids is an awarding winning cosmetologist and business owner who is paving her own lane in the beauty industry. Her brand of the Silk Me Kids Salon and Spa is the first in NOLA that specializes in hair care for kids. She’s taken her brand to new heights with her line of hair care products.

Meme has handcrafted products for kids that help to solve everyday problems of healthy hair care/repair; growth/moisture retention; and unmanageable hair. The product line has four dope collections to serve any hair type need. The product collections are The Silk Me Gentle Baby Collection; Silk Me Kids Hair Care; Silk Me Kids Natural Remedies Collection; and the Silk Me Teens Collection.

Her salon is fully equipped for youth enjoyment while they receive hair care services as well.  In celebration of National Hairstylist Appreciation Day on April 25th, we here at We Empower Magazine got an exclusive interview with Meme.

Meme Kelly (Owner of Silk Me Kids)

Tammy Reese: What inspired you to enter the beauty industry?

Meme Kelly: I  grew up around hair. My great-grandmother did hair and my aunt does hair. I played about it while in college but it wasn’t always a passion.  Due to the lack of opportunity in my field of study in public health in my city, I decided to pursue a career in the beauty industry.

Tammy Reese: How did Silk Me Kids Salon and Spa Come Out?

Meme Kelly: SMK came along because I seen a need and wanted to provide a solution. I wanted to deal with real hair and while servicing my adult clients, the current shifted to their kids hair.

Tammy Reese: Please tell us about some of your highly recommended products and services?

Meme Kelly: Because I have set the tone with making healthy hair care a priority, any service that we offer that deals with treating the hair, is highly recommended. As far as products are concerned, our top sellers are our moisture pack. That bundle includes our Mane Moisturizer and Detangler (which is also a leave in conditioner).

Tammy Reese: What types of feedback have you received so far from the youth?

Meme Kelly: Our main clientele base are kids. They love being in a place that caters to them and sets an inviting atmosphere where they can be themselves.

Tammy Reese: What else would you like for our readers to know about your business

Meme Kelly: Silk Me Kids is the Walt Disney of kids salons and spas, established in 2017. We provide a creative, family friendly, safe environment where children can be themselves. Our products provide manageability, soft hair and moisture. Being the first salon and spa in New Orleans, our salon services leave children feeling like confident, beautiful divas.

Tammy Reese: How do you plan to celebrate National Hairstylist Appreciation Day

Meme Kelly: I will be working of course. Lol.

Tammy Reese: What are you looking forward to for your business?

Meme Kelly: Silk Me Kids mission is to become the educational leader within our community to continue to provide our children with spotlights and opportunities for forth and to embrace their natural tresses.

Tammy Reese: Any spring hair or beauty tips you would have for our readers?

Meme Kelly: In the spring, our kids love to wear their hair presses before their protective styles. This is the time to start prepping the hair with hair treatments and regimens to assure that the hair is healthy throughout the summer.
